Texas Rollergirls

Texas Rollergirls

The end of a Texas Rollergirls' season is always a time of mixed emotions, and this year's championship bout is no different. For familiar faces like hard-hitting Hotrod Honeys blocker Maso Kiss, and the Hell Mary's feisty and cerebral jammer Sinnerfold (also responsible for their kick-ass publicity for years), this will be their last time on the flat track, as the comfort and quiet evenings of retirement beckon. But what a time it will be. The Hotrods have seemed unstoppable all season, displaying a crushing, smashmouth style and a disciplined pack that has cared for little but total domination. After the Hustlers broke their three-year championship streak in 2011, they have had to settle for championship silver every year since, and that has roiled their blood. Their take-no-prisoners approach this year makes it seem like they should just get their name engraved on the title right now. But as any Texas Rollergirls' fan knows, don't count the Hells out, especially in the clinch, and especially when there's a chance for them to tell the Hotrods, one last time, that this may be their house, but they have to fight to keep it.

It's a similar tale in the night's opening bout for third place, but with more amity than enmity. The Hustlers say farewell to some of their most spirited players, like Mommy Rotten, just as the Honkytonk Heartbreakers lose two key components of their 2013 championship-winning jammer lineup in Barbie Got Back and Kitty Karnage. Sad times, for sure, but then there will be new players, as the Heartbreakers have corralled Kansas City Roller Warrior Trauma to bolster their stampede. The jam clock may be ticking down on some of our favorite skaters, but when the Hustlers and the Heartbreakers take the line for the last time this year, you know they're going to leave it all on the track.

Sat., Aug. 16, 5pm. Austin Convention Center, 500 E. Cesar Chavez, 512/404-4000. $15 ($12, advance; $5, kids).
