Texas Rollergirls Championship Double Header

Texas Rollergirls Championship Double Header

There was a time when the Honky-Tonk Heartbreakers were the undisputed queens of flat track Roller Derby in the ATX. From 2004 to 2006, they held the Texas Rollergirls championship in the palm of their gingham-gloved hands. Since then, it's been a dry seven-year spell. They've always had a reputation as the nicest women on the track, yet even if these nice folks didn't always finish last, they've had a hard time getting past the pack and back into championship contention. But not this year. Last month, the Heartbreakers put all the pieces together, wrangling 2012 champions the Hell Marys in what currently stands as the bout of the year. Their jammer roster has been the envy of many a league, but that match made the Heartbreakers' blockers a case study in pack control. Now they face possibly the most dominating force in TXRG history, the Hotrod Honeys. The pink-and-black attack has been at the big dance every year since 2008, taking the title three times. Either way this match-up goes, someone sets a league record. Warm up for the shouting match with the bronze medal match-up, as the Hells and the Hustlers start their path to the 2014 championship.

Sat., July 13, 5pm. Austin Convention Center, 500 E. Cesar Chavez, 512/404-4000. $15 ($12, advance). www.texasrollergirls.org.
