Austin Aztex defeat Texas Dutch Lions 7-0 Thursday, May 24, at House Park

Just a couple of days ago, I asked, "Are the Aztex really that good?" Last night they did their best to answer with a resounding "Yes!" – mauling the Texas Dutch Lions by an eye-popping 7-0 count, to follow up their home-opening 6-1 rout of the El Paso Patriots.

Man of the Match was Kekuta Manneh, the high school junior from Dripping Springs who had four goals, and seemed to get behind the Lions defense almost at will. Jesus "Chuy" Cortes added a goal and two more assists, and his hard work on the left flank continues to win him recognition and support in the stands. The other goals were from Will Morse and defender Ross Kelly, while Kris Tyrpak, the hat-trick hero of the El Paso game, added an assist, but also repeatedly opened holes in the Texas defense with dangerous runs.

Overall, though, as in the El Paso game, this was a total team effort; the Aztex dominated in every part of the field – winning 50-50 balls, finding open spaces, covering opponents' runs – they look like a pretty complete team, at this point in a young season.

By the end, the Lions were a thoroughly demoralized bunch. As I was filing out, I passed a Texas midfielder who'd come over to the stands to say hi to some friends. How was he doing? "It was fucking seven nil," and a shake of the head was all he could manage.

Music to a home fan's ears. The way things are looking, we may be hearing more of it as the season unfolds.

Next up: The New Orleans Jesters are in town next weekend for back-to-back games 7:30pm Friday & Saturday, June 1-2, at House Park, 13th & Lamar. Tickets are $10; $50 for eight; kids 10 and under free. See the Aztex website for more info.
