Lonestar Rollergirls fill the SXSW sports void

TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls

With the Toros on the road, the Stars gameless, and the Express inactive till their March 30 exhibition against new parent club the Texas Rangers, seems like it's slim pickings for sports fans in Austin this weekend. But wait, what's that rolling sound? The TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls smashing through a competition-free weekend with the second bout of their 2011 season. It's an easy weekend for undefeated banked-track champions the Cherry Bombs, who get another chance to check out their challengers from the sidelines when the Putas del Fuego take on the Hellcats. Last year's silver medalists, the Hellcats, will be looking to send a clear message to the Bombs that their time at the top may be short-lived. They may have to get in line, since the Rhinestone Cowgirls have already staked their claim to be No. 1 contenders. The hard-riding terrors didn't just defeat the Holy Rollers in their Feb. 20 matchup; they left their brand on the season with an 87-23 beat-down. The champs better take notes: They'll face every single team on the way to October's Calvello Cup. Putas Del Fuego vs. Hellcats: Sat. March 12, 7pm (doors 6pm). Palmer Events Center, 900 Barton Springs. $13-15. www.txrd.com.
