Austin Men's Soccer Association hosts a preseason outreach event, and more

AMSA Day! The Austin Men's Soccer Association hosts a preseason outreach event Sunday, Feb. 13, 10am-noon, at Onion Creek Soccer Complex, 5600 E. William Cannon. Come play a friendly game and meet the players and captains.

The U.S. game against Egypt, scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 9, in Cairo, has been canceled due to the current "unrest" there. Some 30 other international games will take place on this first major international game day of 2011, highlighted by France-Brazil (ESPN2, 1:55pm), Argentina-Portugal, and Germany-Italy.

The North American Soccer League has announced its 2011 schedule; the eight teams will each play 28 games, April 9 through Sept. 24. The competing 15-team USL PRO, meanwhile, will kick off its 24-game schedule a week earlier, with Orlando FC (ex-Austin Aztex) playing Richmond on April 2.

Big moves, especially in England, on the last day of the winter transfer window, highlighted by the English record of $80 million Chelsea paid Liverpool for Spanish striker Fernando Torres. Chelsea also bought Brazilian defender David Luiz for $40 million to boost their flagging title hopes, while Liverpool, in the first transfer since Boston Red Sox owners took control, paid $89 million to sign Andy Carroll from Newcastle and Luis Suárez from Ajax Amsterdam.

European Champions League Round of 16 play starts Feb. 15, as does the Copa Libertadores group stage in South America.
