Will Johnson's Baseball Paintings

Centro-matic frontman is talented painter as well

Will Johnson's Baseball Paintings

Will Johnson is a man of many talents. Known primarily as the driving force behind Centro-matic and South San Gabriel and for having played alongside Jim James, Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis, and M. Ward in last year's highly touted supergroup Monsters of Folk, he's also a well-regarded visual artist. In his folky Howard Finster-esque paintings, Johnson pays homage to baseball greats both known and not-so-known, focusing on Negro League players. This exhibit is similar in theme and style to those of fellow local artist/musician Tim Kerr, who concentrates largely on folk, jazz, and blues legends. In case there are questions regarding his credibility on the field, Johnson plays a mean second base for Waterloo Records' softball team. Bringing the baseball theme full circle, hot dogs from Frank will be served at the opening. Show runs through April 30. Opening: Thu., March 11, 7pm. IF+D, 208 Colorado, 469-0870. Free.
