Amp'd play season finale, Potters continue their surge, and more
By Nick Barbaro, Fri., Feb. 22, 2008
As semipredicted last week, the Stoke Potters have moved into first place in the English League Championship, notching their fourth straight league win, while their two nearest rivals could do no better than draw. Still a long way to go in the season, but ... a top-two finish would put the Austin Aztex's sister team into the English Premier League next year, just in time for the Aztex debut in the United Soccer Leagues First Division.
Second Division Barnsley over powerhouse Liverpool – in Liverpool, no less – was the highlight of the FA Cup Fifth Round, played this last weekend. Also notable: Manchester United's 4-0 blowout of Premiership rivals Arsenal. Full results online.
On Tuesday, though, Liverpool bounced back with a huge, 2-0 win over Italian champs Inter Milan in the Champions League. With their season in England just about dead, the Merseysiders need another glorious run in Europe to salvage something from 2008. And, forza Roma! 2-1 comeback over Real Madrid. Again, results online.
