Lightning buckles under Heat, and U.S. advances to Gold Cup semi-finals

The Austin Lightning lost a 2-1 heartbreaker in Laredo Saturday night to fall one point behind the Laredo Heat with two games to go in the season. The Lightning's last home game of the season is against the Augusta Fireball, this Friday,July 22, 7:30pm at Williamson County Regional Park (located just north of the intersection of Highway 1431 and Sam Bass Road in Cedar Park).,

The United States got two goals and an assist from DaMarcus Beasley on Saturday to advance to the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals with a 3-1 win over Jamaica. On Thursday, July 21, they take on Honduras, who knocked out Costa Rica, 3-2. On the other side of the draw, played in Houston, Panama beat South Africa on penalty kicks, and Colombia stunned Mexico, 2-1. The final is on Sunday, July 24 in New York.

Over in Europe, it's already the 2005-6 preseason, and once again, several of the continent's biggest clubs are warming up with exhibition tours of the U.S. Chelsea and AC Milan are facing each other and a couple of MLS squads over the next week, and Real Madrid beat the L.A. Galaxy 2-0 on Monday night.
