Leagues around the world took a break last week to make way for the national teams: two full slates of World Cup qualifiers, on Saturday and then Wednesday. The U.S. men (who are playing in Panama as we go to press), beat El Salvador 2-0 in a particularly ill-tempered affair in Columbus, Ohio. Next up: Oct. 9, the return match in San Salvador, where the Americanos will no doubt get a warm welcome. Overall, across 80 games on five continents, the only notable upset was European champion Greece losing 2-1 to Albania, which set off riots throughout the region.

UEFA Champions League kicks off next week; in ESPN's game of the week, you can get a look at this year's version of Los Galacticos, as Real Madrid, with newly acquired Michael Owen added to the glittery roster, visits Bayer Leverkusen; Wed., Sept. 15, 1:30pm, ESPN2.

St. Edward's men opened Southwest Conference play last week with home losses to nationally ranked Incarnate Word and Midwestern State. They host two more conference foes this weekend: Northeastern State University at 5pm, Friday, Sept. 10, and Missouri Southern State College at 1pm, Sunday, Sept. 12. On the soccer field; free.

The UT women had two good nonconference wins last week but face a big test this Friday, as they open Big 8 play with a visit to fourth-ranked Texas A&M. This rivalry game has been the season finale in past years; this year it comes early – two weeks before the rest of the conference schedule – so the Horns can end the regular season by renewing another rivalry – against perennial power SMU. The A&M-Texas winner will be the early favorite to win the Big 8 title.
