Westlake's chances at going to state this season are good for two reasons. First, the two teams ranked in front of them in the overall state rankings (Midland Lee and Lewisville) are playing in Division I of the playoff bracket, whereas Westlake is in Division II. In fact, no top 10 team in the Division II pairings survived the first round of playoff games except the Chaps. Second, Westlake has a powerful and potentially unstoppable offense thanks to two key receivers, both with family members who have made names for themselves in the lore of Texas high school football and beyond. Reid Brees, the little brother of ex-Chap and current Purdue quarterback Drew Brees, and Christian Campbell, son of Longhorn and Oiler legend Earl, have been giving secondaries fits all season. Together they have combined for over 50 receptions, 30 touchdowns, and more than 1,000 yards. That trend should continue throughout the playoffs.
This Friday, the Chaps will play Conroe (9-2) in Katy, Texas, just west of Houston. If the Westlakers win, they will face either Lufkin or Garland in the regional semifinals. If the winning streak continues, Westlake will be only two wins away from the state championship game, a goal that has been coveted all season.
Kickoff of Westlake vs. Conroe is 8pm at Rhodes Stadium in Katy. For tickets and directions call Westlake High School. 432-0041.
