If It's Summer, It Must Be Shakespeare
Summer is the time for Shakespeare, so naturally here are a couple of the Bard's plays being staged in the Austin area -- Julius Caesar from the Austin Shakespeare Festival and Two Gentlemen of Verona from Different Stages -- and directors Paul Norton and Norman Blumensaadt to explain how they came to produce them this season.

Tracers
Director and sound designer Stephen Balgooyen and his youthful cast bring us the horrors of war live and in living drab green in Tracers, but shouted lines and an overwhelming sound design render much of their work on this difficult material unintelligible.

Taking Sides
A few weeks ago, Ronald Harwood's Taking Sides -- about the interrogation of a world-class conductor and possible Nazi sympathizer during WWII -- wouldn't have seemed all that relevant to the world's headlines. Now, it does, this solid production from ActAustin and the Magnolia Theatre Company may make you consider the characters (and thus the situation) beyond the decorated stage's rectangle of light.

The title characters in Sarah Daniels' play Gut Girls are brash, foul-mouthed, beer-swilling cockneys, carving their lots from life at the slaughterhouse, and the UT Department of Theatre & Dance production's colorful design work, solid direction, and vivid performances put us inside their greasy, tough world.

Carmina Burana: Hi, Latin!
The New Texas Music Works rendition of Carl Orff's masterwork Carmina Burana was the usual exhilarating sonic roller-coaster of songs about love and lust and way too much drinking in the Middle Ages, but the exuberance of conductor Craig Hella Johnson also made it feel like a good new friend was introducing us to one of his favorite old friends.
