Cabaret
Zachary Scott Theatre Center's production of Cabaret embraces the play's sexuality and hedonism but doesn't always convey its debauched defiance
"...numbers like "So What" and "What Would You Do." Greg Gondek brings a warmly naive, sympathetic presence to the..."

Hedda
In the dirigo group production Hedda, director Laura Somers reimagines Henrik Ibsen's classic as a perverse and sometimes brilliant Doris Day / Rock Hudson flick, coupling late 1950s zip -- party dresses and sweater vests, manhattans and vodka martinis, breezy entrances and exits -- with a forbidden sexuality that ratchets the tensions of Ibsen's play to a whole new level.
"...a fine, multifaceted performance -- goes on and on. Greg Gondek's Jerry Lewis-like performance as geek husband George Tesman..."

Curieosity
Curieosity, writer-director-choreographer Sharon Sparlin's original work about Marie Curie and her physicist husband Pierre is an energetic collage of performance styles, with actors on the go like atoms smashing inside a supercollider and spraying their sub-atomic anatomies in every direction, in all manner of presentational genres.
"...jumping through male-held hoops) that the character must perform. Greg Gondek's Pierre is even less fleshed out, and there..."

Romulus
Gore Vidal's script for Romulus, from a play by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, is as perceptive as they come, and the Bedlam Faction's production has more than a few things to recommend it, but the company's playing style often undercuts rather than enhances the drama.
"...Matney, who plays Caesar Rupf with passionate gusto, and Greg Gondek, who plays two distinctive though quite similar roles:..."

More Places at the Table

May 24, 2002 Arts Feature by Robert Faires

Art Stripped Naked
Art Stripped Naked, Wayne Alan Brenner's comedy of the relationship between a father and son -- augmented by an ongoing discourse of the nature of art -- is both sweet and simple, with a heartwarming twist, and its presentation by Hyde Park Theatre makes for a gentle evening on one's senses.
"...trace of vulnerability when turning to matters more personal. Greg Gondek plays delivery boy Dennis with an engaging combination..."

Taking Sides
A few weeks ago, Ronald Harwood's Taking Sides -- about the interrogation of a world-class conductor and possible Nazi sympathizer during WWII -- wouldn't have seemed all that relevant to the world's headlines. Now, it does, this solid production from ActAustin and the Magnolia Theatre Company may make you consider the characters (and thus the situation) beyond the decorated stage's rectangle of light.
"...the single most imposing presence I've seen onstage since Greg Gondek donned 60 pounds of ceiling-high Lobster Man costume..."

The Gypsy Chain
While the dirigo group should be applauded for the scope of The Gypsy Chain, this ensemble-developed project about Earth First! activist David "Gypsy" Chain, who was killed defending the forests of Northern California from illegal clear-cutting, the onstage effectiveness of the work falls short of its sociopolitical message, while Gypsy's personal story is lost in the muddied construction of a play that isn't sure exactly what it wants to be.
"...Roten as Sleeper, an ex-lawyer turned Earth First! leader. Greg Gondek puts his charismatic energies into the role of..."

King Lear
In the Public Domain Theatre Company's production of King Lear, director Robi Polgar and company bring Shakespeare's play into the present with high tech and high fashion, and the smooth execution of the concept create a novel version of this familiar tragedy with a striking proximity to our lives.
"...(and an appealing touch of Lone Star grit); and Greg Gondek's Edgar feigns madness and defies his brother with..."

Bingo: Scenes of Money and Death
A vague performance at the center of the Public Domain Theatre Company's production of Edward Bond's Bingo diminishes the impact of Bond's play, but does not eclipse it. It feels relevant right here, right now.

Bleacher Bums: Take Me Out to the Ballgame
It may be too early for most of us to really care about the baseball season, but the Subterranean Theatre Company production of the comedy Bleacher Bums is a near-perfect game that's worth catching.

Desire: Cold Comfort Farm
Ada Calhoun covers Laura Somers' desire, a "reconsideration" of Eugene O'Neill's Desire Under the Elms.
