By Monica Riese, Fri., Nov. 15, 2013
• We hear Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air) is heading to town next month to shoot his adaptation of Chad Kultgen's novel Men, Women, & Children. Adam Sandler, Jennifer Garner, and Rosemarie DeWitt star, but Vicky Boone Casting has also put out the word recently for doctors to appear in the film also known as Pale Blue Dot, and she's been scouting dive hotels. Never a dull moment on the film production scene.
• Speaking of busy, local bongo master Matthew McConaughey will receive the Desert Palm Achievement Award in January at the 25th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival. The Jan. 4, 2014, ceremony perfectly caps off the actor's tremendous 2013, which will have seen him in Mud, Dallas Buyers Club, and The Wolf of Wall Street; his turn on HBO's True Detective across from Woody Harrelson premieres Jan. 12.
• After a successful premiere at last month's Housecore Horror Film Festival, Death Metal Angola is heading to Doc NYC this weekend. Jeremy Xido's documentary follows the couple behind the African nation's first-ever metal festival; read our interview with the filmmaker in "Give Me Freedom and Give Me Death Metal," Oct. 25.
• Bryan Poyser's Kickstarter campaign to crowdfund a roadshow of his Air Sex comedy The Bounceback got a little extra boost from Richard Linklater. In his introduction to a private screening, Linklater told the audience, "It's what I think indie film needs right now, to reinvigorate our distribution model." The campaign is still $45,000 short as of this writing, and it ends Sunday, Nov. 17.
