'SXSW Presents': High School Shorts Program
High School Shorts Program
Show a kid a film and he's entertained for an hour or so. Teach a kid to film and the results might surprise, instruct, and delight you. That's what many South by Southwest Film 05 filmgoers discovered at the first Texas High School Film Competition, an addition to the festival's Texas Shorts program. These films, along with work form Austin-based Motion Media Arts Center students, are the focus of the next episode of SXSW Presents.
The final lineup was TBA at press time and is subject to change. Likely to air are place winners of the 2005 Texas High School Film Competition, including "Comic Y" (D: David McGinnis). "Working Students" (D: Kara Marshall and Taylor McBride), and "Life of a Pencil" (D: David Vass). Other films include "The Water Fountain Encounter" (D: Jason Harter), "Oranges Saves the Day" (D: Anne Dunckel), "L.I.V.E." (D: Gary Moore), "Idea for a Movie" (D: Brian Nelligan), "The Gift" (D: Rachel Stuckey), "The Dancing Man" (D: Jason Harter), and "Running on Empty" (D: Anisa Boukhzif).
SXSW Presents provides a unique and let's face it, downright smart solution to the problem facing all those great small films that made the arduous journey into a film festival, yet didn't explode onto the indie scene. For those who do not venture out during SXSW (we know you're out there), here's an opportunity to see what all the hubbub is about from the comfort of your couch.
The 2006 High School Film Competition is now under way and will again be a part of SXSW Film. Deadline for entries is Dec. 12. For more information, see www.sxsw.com.
SXSW Presents airs Fridays at 10pm on PBS affiliate KLRU.
