Love Me if You DareD: Yann Samuell; with Guillaume Canet and Marion Cotillard
Narrative Feature Special Screenings, Regional Premiere
Julien (Canet) and Sophie (Cotillard) have this thing they've done since they were kids, and it keeps life worth living. They call it "Game or Not," a steady back and forth of dares, like Julien pissing on the floor in the principal's office or Sophie taking exams in her underwear. As they grow older, the dares turn more dangerous, physically and emotionally, and it's sickly funny to watch them torture each other. You end up rooting them on, hoping they'll give up everything good and normal in their lives and take the next cockamamie dare. Screw the dad, screw the wife screw everybody who doesn't get it. This is the selfish kind of love story, the kind where the lovers love with complete disregard for their own well-being and the feelings of those around them. And, although sometimes annoying, the carnival-esque visuals suit this fantastical story of over-the-top devotion.
