Not Your Average Arts & Crafts: Summer Media Camps

May 31, 2002, Screens

When is that cringing adage "Be cool, stay in school" a little less wince-worthy? When school actually is cool -- ridiculously cool in the case of the Austin Film Society's Summer Media Camps, at which kids age 13-17 can crash-course in either Super-8 or DV movie-making. AFS Director of Artist Services Elisabeth Sikes will handle the first-session schooling on "Super-8 Guerrilla Filmmaking" from June 3-7 ($50 fee), then Sikes will share duties with the Camacho Activity Center's Don Goerner from July 8-12, firing kids up with their "Blazing Trails in Digital Video" ($55). Class size is limited to a dozen lucky souls, so call now to rack up some serious cool points with your budding Buñuelitos.

To sign up for the summer media camps, call 322-0145. To find more out about AFS and the Camacho Activity Center, visit and, respectively.
