Two married people, an unemployed screenwriter and a would-be actress, tell calculated lies to impress each other and eventually fall in love with the image the other has created. Moral values fall by the wayside as the characters in this tragic comedy react to the harsh realities of everyday Cuban life.

At 13, Monica has already developed a tough exterior to protect herself and hold on to what little she has: her friends, her boyfriend, her dignity, and her pride. As Christmas Eve approaches and celebrations begin, she dreams of being part of that magic, but the streets imprison her in a life of poverty, loneliness, drugs, and violence.

They strive for love and happiness, but their strict preferences in men and personal issues sometimes get in the way.

This dark comedy recounts the story of an unsuccessful lawyer who is overcome with depression. Enclosed in his apartment, he finally decides to commit suicide on New Year's Eve but is halted when his fascination with a TV star and the lottery change his life.

Blending storytelling techniques with the conventions of traditional documentary, the true story of Paulina Cruz Suarez is recounted by Paulina herself along with cinematic re-creations of key events in her life. She returns to Veracruz to confront her parents -- who traded her away as a young child to the town's physically and sexually abusive "boss" -- as well as to reclaim her past and regain her sense of identity.
