"Documents of Persons & Place"

June 5, 1998, Screens

This month's Texas Documentary Tour program marks a change of pace with "Documents of Persons & Place," a showcase of two documentary shorts (rather than the usual feature) followed by a workshop on the documentary process.

New Austin Film Society (AFS) Managing Director Rebecca Campbell will present her multi-award winning PBS project "The Town that Jack Built," a poetic interface of the 1920s boom town and now official ghost town Picher, Okla., and the few remaining mining families and Quapaw Indians who still live there.

Award-winning documentarian Maria Teresa Rodriguez is coming in from Philadelphia with "From Here to There - De Aquí a Allá," an experimental collagist exploration of the stories behind her Colombian, Irish, and American roots. The search for these stories was provoked by her father's premature death.

Campbell and Rodriguez will be joined on the workshop panel to follow by moderator Anne del Castillo, AFS' new Artists' Services Director. Del Castillo has moved to Austin from Boston where she served as series coordinator for Frontline at the prestigious PBS affiliate WGBH. The workshop will concentrate primarily on exhibition options and how they should shape projects. All three women have had extensive experience and success in this arena (particularly with PBS), so the knowledge they have to share should prove invaluable. - Jerry Johnson

"Documents of Persons & Place" will be presented as part of the Texas Documentary Tour on Wednesday, June 10, at the Alamo Drafthouse. The screening of "The Town That Jack Built" and "From Here to There - De Aquí a Allá" begins at 7pm. Following the screening there will be a special workshop on the documentary process with filmmakers Rebecca Campbell and María Teresa Rodríguez and moderated by Anne del Castillo. Doors open at 6:15pm. Admission is $5 ($3.50 for students and AFS members). The Texas Documentary Tour is a co-presentation of the Austin Film Society, the University of Texas RTF Dept., The Austin Chronicle, and SXSW Film.
