On March 11, President Obama made history as the first sitting president to speak at SXSW. On a brief but packed trip to Austin (including tacos with Mayor Adler at Torchy’s), the president discussed with Texas Tribune CEO and Editor in Chief Evan Smith the importance of technology in civic engagement, the troubled launch of, and some issues especially sensitive in Texas, like low voter turnout and the chilling disenfranchisement that followed the Republican-engineered voter ID law. He earned his biggest laugh line by reclaiming a certain infamous meme; after pointing out that under his presidency, the unemployment rate has dropped and we avoided a great Depression, he deadpanned: “Thanks, Obama.”
