DIY Composting Basics: Tips From Austin Resource Recovery

By Robyn Ross, April 24, 2015, News

Composting is a natural process that breaks down organic materials into a dark, earthy, soil-like material. Putting compost on your lawn and garden adds nutrients to help plants grow.

Ingredients: (1) organic material; (2) water; (3) oxygen

Benefits: waste reduction; mulch or soil supplement; protecting groundwater; saving landfill

Process: "greens" (nitrogen-rich) plus "browns" (carbon-rich) plus air & water produce water vapor, heat, and CO2

Recommended: a pre-fab or homemade bin: 3' x 3' x 3'

Greens: vegetable/fruit peelings; inedible leftovers; tea/coffee scraps; fresh grass clippings

Browns: dry grass/leaves; wood chips/sawdust; paper; natural fibers

Ratio: one share greens to three shares browns

Maintenance: keep moist, aerated, and turned
