Tickling Voters' Fancies
Want that little something extra with your voter registration card? Got to Burlesque the Vote.
With the Oct. 6 voter-registration deadline hurtling toward would-be voters, it still seems some people can't get motivated to sign up for their cards. How about liberally sprinkling some old-fashioned glamour into the mix as a motivator? That's the aim of the Burlesque the Vote event at Antone's this Friday, Oct. 3, at 8pm – three days before the voter-registration deadline.
"The theme of the show is a sexy librarian voter-registration drive," explained organizer Audrey Maker, who has merged figure-hugging with form-filling before. "Four years ago, I had an event where you had to register to get into the show, and it was a big success," she said.
The evening's combination of the political and the pulchritudinous will include performances from local burlesque troupes Kitty Kitty Bang Bang, Carousel Cabaret, and the Jigglewatts, plus Dallas' Lollie Bombs and Maker's own ensemble, Burlesque for Peace. "Some of them are doing something very political, and some are doing something silly," said Maker. "It's a way to deal with this election and a way to bring some fun into it."
Tickets are $15 general admission or $30 seated, and proceeds from this nonpartisan event go to the American Civil Liberties Union Central Texas Chapter.
*Oops! The following correction ran in the October 10, 2008 issue: Last week, with the article "Tickling Voters' Fancies," News, Oct. 3, we ran a photo of a burlesque performer accompanied by the cutline, "Katie of Burlesque for Peace." While Katie indeed participated in the Burlesque for Peace photo shoot, she was not in fact performing with the troupe.
