KROX turns back the clock

Two months after the abrupt departure of program director Melody Lee, alternative rocker KROX-FM 101.5 is turning to former "K-Nack" mainstay Lynn Lawless to guide the station. In the early Nineties Lawless was program director and morning host for KNNC-FM 107.7, Austin's first commercial alternative rock station, which disappeared soon after KROX went on the air in 1995. "We were looking for someone who really gets Austin," said Scott Gillmore, market manager for Emmis Communications' six Austin stations, including KROX. For the past seven years Lawless has been working at KMYZ-FM, "The Edge," an alt-rock station in Tulsa, where he is known as Lynn Barstow. He will take over the program director job vacated by Lee, another KNNC alum, who "left to pursue other opportunities" in October.

Lawless' first challenge will be to create a new morning show, Gillmore said. Mornings are currently occupied by former producer Jason Dick, who took over when the Sean and Trina morning show disintegrated a few months ago; Trina is now doing middays and Sean is no longer with the station. "Lynn has a history of developing talent," Gillmore said. It is still "uncertain" if Lawless will take an on-air slot when he starts in January, Gillmore said.
