Veronica Rivera soundly defeated Marc Levin in Saturday's run-off election for Position 6 on the Austin Community College Board of Trustees. Fewer than 6,000 people voted, but about 62% chose lawyer Rivera over lawyer Levin, thanks to a well-funded campaign that benefited from strong support from the ACC teacher's union and a phone-bank message featuring the voice of former Mayor Kirk Watson. Rivera's supporters also used Levin's not-too-distant past as a conservative activist at UT to motivate voters.
Levin offered gracious congratulations to Rivera, though his campaign suggests that ACC's decision to offer early voting (in which Rivera swamped Levin even more handily) only on ACC campuses contributed to his defeat. Rivera and fellow new trustee Jeffrey Richard (who won election outright in May) will be sworn in July 5 and immediately step into an accreditation controversy that threatens the fall jobs of more than 200 ACC faculty (see below).
