AISD's Reagan Safety Probe

By Jordan Smith, April 25, 2003, News

At Monday night's meeting of the Austin ISD board of trustees, President Doyle Valdez announced the formation of a Reagan High School Safety Review Team, charged with reviewing policies and procedures at Reagan to determine whether violence at the school is "beyond what exists at similarly situated campuses both locally and nationally." Further, the team is being asked to "ascertain and advise" whether the death of 15-year-old Ortralla Mosley -- allegedly murdered by her boyfriend and classmate Marcus McTear -- was "reasonably foreseeable." The team is to complete the first part of its assessment and report back to the board by June 20. The specific inquiry into Mosley's death will come as soon as Austin police and the Travis Co. District Attorney's Office give the go-ahead.

The district has tapped four attorneys -- former County Attorney Ken Oden, ACC board of trustees President Rafael Quintanilla, school law specialist Sara Leon, and former SafePlace board member Leonard Woods -- to form its review team. The Texas School Safety Center at Southwest Texas State University will consult with the team.

Still, the Rev. Sterling Lands II and the local chapter of the NAACP aren't satisfied with the scope of the district's proposed review; they plan an independent investigation of their own into the level of violence at Reagan and other AISD campuses.
