The Austin Campaign, a community-based effort to educate people about the "war on terrorism," will hold a public meeting Saturday, Aug. 10, from noon-2pm at the Carver Library, 1161 Angelina. The campaign opposes the war as a threat to peace, democracy, social services, and many other positive attributes of modern civilization. On Sunday, Aug. 11, the Alamo Drafthouse will host a benefit for the American Friends Service Committee and the Border Committee of Women Workers -- an independent Mexican organization founded and directed by maquiladora workers. The benefit includes a screening of Lourdes Portillo's film, Señorita Extraviada (Missing Young Woman), about the murders of hundreds of young women in Juárez over the last decade, and a performance by Tammy Gomez.
