Naked City

Intel Indecisive

By Michael Erard, February 15, 2002, News

After a year of promising a plan for AN-2, its unfinished office building at Fifth and San Antonio, Intel has once again postponed making an announcement. The company renewed its permit for the building -- originally set to expire on Jan. 15 -- on Jan. 3, buying itself another 180-day grace period, but let lapse its permit to build an adjoining parking garage. Says Intel spokesperson Jeanne Forbis, the economy has been too unstable to choose a concrete direction on the concrete shell. Because the company may still need Austin's goodwill, it also applied for a special permit to put up decorative panels designed by UT students. The permit for the panels cost $344, which isn't part of the City Council's $15 million incentive package to Intel.
