Council Countdown
Fri., March 24, 2000
The filing deadline for the May 6 City Council election was 5pm on Wednesday, March 22. Of the four positions on the ballot, two -- Place 2, being retired by Gus Garcia, who has served on the council for nine years, and Place 5, being vacated by UT professor Bill Spelman after statewide voters rejected a proposition that would have allowed him to be paid for his city service -- are open seats. The mayor, meanwhile, is running virtually unopposed; and, despite the incumbent's unpopularity among some Eastside constituents and an aborted challenge from local football hero Thomas Henderson, Council Member Willie Lewis has drawn only two opponents in the race to keep his Place 6 seat on the council dais.
