1891: Austin Daily News begins publishing.
1898: Austin Tribune begins publishing.
1904: Austin Tribune takes over Austin Daily News.
1914: The Democratic Statesman takes over Austin Tribune.
1914: Hal H. Sevier launches the Austin American.
1916: Democratic Statesman shifts to afternoon publication, changes name to The Evening Statesman.
1924: Evening Statesman and Austin American combine some operations, but maintain separate editorial staffs. Sunday edition is published as Austin American-Statesman.
1973: The two dailies merge, begin publishing daily as Austin American-Statesman.
1974: Mike Laosa begins newspaper career in the American-Statesman circulation department.
1976: Cox Enterprises buys American-Statesman and papers in Waco, Lufkin, and Port Arthur from the Fentress family for an undisclosed price.
1981: American-Statesman moves into new building on Town Lake.
1981: Austin Chronicle begins publishing.
1986: Roger Kintzel becomes publisher of the American-Statesman.
1994: American-Statesman begins publishing XLent.
May 1995: Former Statesman editor Roger Kintzel tells The Austin Chronicle, "I plan to stay here a long time."
July 1995: Rich Oppel named editor of American-Statesman.
December 1995: Kintzel leaves Austin for Atlanta; Mike Laosa becomes publisher of the American-Statesman. -- R.B.
