I Can't Stop (F&A)

Texas Platters: Summer Breeze

Co-founder Sam Llanas gone since 2011, Kurt Neumann – the other member of the original BoDeans and a longtime resident of Dripping Springs – has taken the reins of one of heartland rock's best practitioners. Except for the occasional harmony part Llanas offered, not much has changed on I Cant Stop, and with super skin-pounder Kenny Aronoff back in the fold, Neumann offers up 12 tracks of the kind, earnest, and energetic roots rock he's been crafting for almost 30 years. Some of it leans toward lyrical cliche ("Love Somebody," "We Let the Good Times Roll") and a brand of big chorus and hooky loud rock popular 20 years ago. Still, "Oh Mama" and "Stuck Until October" possess what made the BoDeans popular in the first place: a sound decidedly American and melodies that feel immediately familiar. While I Cant Stop breaks no new ground, it's sure to please the band's followers.
