Austin's outsider bard flips to Los Angeles brand Burger Records for his eighth LP and serves up a sonically superior platter of slacker rock spiked with punk and country. Propelled by the rhythm section of Julia Hungerford and Geena Spigarelli, with additional bass by the Flesh Lights' Jeremy Steen, and varnished with a cleaner vocal production, The Love That You Own unzips with wild-times lament "Wish the Night to Be Longer," recalling the Faces before a noise solo ejects in Wes' weirdo territory. Follow-up to last year's Trans-Am Summer Blues, it delivers a pair of JWC3 greatest hits: the big-hearted title track, lifted by the brass-knuckle sax of Mark Tonucci, and the slo-mo transcendence of "Love Drinks." Bruised by half-written missteps like the redundant "Hanging With the Band" and cop-out jam "Money in My Pocket," TLTYO spins an uneven exchange of excellence and excrement, but this Golden Boy was never known for being careful.
