Mohawk, January 6

To crib a line from Phranchyze, the Austin rapper with a basketball jones and the wingspan of LaMarcus Aldridge, Monday night was "colder than a Packers game at Christmas." The chill factor didn't stop ATX's hottest MCs from spitting fire on the indoor stage on a night where 20-minute sets ran with the precision of Mussolini's trains. The blue chippers of Team Next showcased Austin's young talent and deep bench, getting lifted on "Michael Phelps" and "Back on Deck." LNS Crew had a couple holes in the roster, but brothers Kydd Jones and Tank spit bullets over the woozy backdrop of "Russian Roulette." The group's command to "keep your L's up" proved a perfect segue for a surprise set from the League of Extraordinary Gz, the super subs filling in for Gerald G, who was witnessing the birth of his child. K-Paul and Pimpin Pen of VIP bodied mics on some grown-man shit, previewing the UGK steez of forthcoming full-length Country Cousins. The trillest cats in the building showed sly veteran savvy in coaxing crowd participation: "If you got love for yo' mama, put your hand up."
