Kelly Willis on Evan Johns

September 28, 2012, Music

Some of my first gigs ever were opening for Evan in D.C., and in Austin our first gig was at the Hole in the Wall opening for him. The guys in my band worshipped the ground he walked on. A couple of them took guitar lessons (and bass lessons) from him when he would come through town, mostly to bask in his presence. Evan is just as entertaining offstage as on. That crazy thick drawl of his voice turns any stray comment into something worth hearing! He was something to behold onstage. Like he was having the best time of his life. And the music was so gritty and cool. Mark Korpi was so great and a perfect straight man next to Evan. Really exciting times for me. But he was also a real encouraging person at the start of my career that made me think I could do it. Imagine how opposite from him I was onstage! I'm not sure what he saw in me, but for sure we all wanted to be him!
