Ice Cream Man Presents!
By Matt Allen, Fri., March 19, 2010
Friday's Flavor: Avi Buffalo
To give away ice cream in Austin during South by Southwest, I drive the ice cream truck from my hometown of Long Beach, Calif. A couple of years back, the Ice Cream Crew rocked some hometown pride in this column by featuring a band called Crystal Antlers. This year we're happy to recommend to Festivalgoers another Long Beach band, Avi Buffalo.
Avi Buffalo's a band of young'uns that falls somewhere between Wilco, Beachwood Sparks (more Long Beach love ... give it up for Farmer Dave!), and the Shins. That explains why Sub Pop's putting out the band's first LP next month. Most of the quartet is barely out of high school, but they're naturals. We caught up with them during Ice Cream Man's 2009 summer tour, and we're happy to see them making the trip to Austin's March madness.
Avi Buffalo begins a cross-country tour in April with Japandroids, and the tour closes with a record release show at the Troubadour May 1. If you're up for more Long Beach love in the meantime, keep an eye out for another of our hometown favorites, Dios Malos – their new album on Buddyhead is radtastic.
Catch Avi Buffalo on Friday:
KXLU and olFactory Records Party at Domy Books 12:40pm, 913 E. Cesar Chavez
AAM 2010 SXSW Extravaganza 2:45pm, Galaxy Room Backyard
