No More Heroes (Anti-)

Austin's newest, albeit temporary, residents get a bum rap, because the chemistry between lyricist Swamburger and vocalist Alexandrah hits a little too close to will.i.am and Fergie. It's odd, because Solillaquists of Sound are actually the anti-Black Eyed Peas. The Orlando, Fla., natives lean on the same cleanly produced sound ("Look") as BEP, but they're conceptual, aggressive, and principled in ways BEP hasn't been since Bridging the Gap. SoS' second, No More Heroes is about breaking down the illusion of heroic immortality, a notion attacked head-on through "Harriet Tubman Pt. 2," "Bulletproof," and "The Roots of Kinte." It's hardly the full extent of their grievances, though. Swam and Al have a laundry list of society's troubles they want to shed light on, from the materialism of "Dolla Dolla" to "Popcorn," which hates on the boob tube. Kill your TV, they'd tell you. That's where the so-called "Heroes" live. (Thu., 11:20pm, the Independent @ 501 Studios.)
