The Truth Is Here (Rhymesayers)

As Brother Ali alludes on lead track "Real as Can Be," the time since 2007's breakout, The Undisputed Truth, has been a busy one. That hurried schedule rears its ugly head on The Truth Is Here, an EP that does little to advance the Undisputed success the Minneapolis MC's long fought to achieve. From the wah-wah wails of slinker "Little Rodney" to the triumphant string ensemble fueling "Palm the Joker," Ali sticks close to soulful beats pumped into the mix by Atmosphere's Anthony Davis. Pianos dance on "Good Lord" and jazz out with "Begin Here," each providing a canvas for Ali to wax poetic on his Muslim faith and the daily struggles a heavy-set albino faces. It's still Rhymesayers, and "The Believers" rightfully argue, "Try to find a better team," but the underlying Truth is that Ali's been down this road before. (Wed., Back Alley Social, 12:30am; Thu., Habana Bar Backyard, 12mid.)
