Mind Your Manners

Taking the ones and twos to the second power, Austin's Table Manners Crew have earned national notoriety for their four-turntable technique. "It really opens up a lot of possibilities in terms of making remixes on the fly and incorporating more tricks," says TMC's Nerdy Harry. The DJ coalition's success, though, has more to do with their intrinsic power of three, as each of the crew's members bring their own unique style and specialty to the table: Nerdy Harry is renowned for his mixing, DJ Digg for his eclectic source material, and DJ Tats for his tight scratching. The Crew recently completed a mixtape for Brooklyn's Nature Sounds label and starts a new monthly residency at Red Fez on Wednesday, further complicating their intense itinerary. DJ Digg spins solo three nights a week, while DJ Tats holds down Whiskey Bar on Fridays, but Table Manners Crew's bread and butter remains their Saturday night mainstay at Plush, one of the few events that brings together every aspect of hip-hop, from graffiti artists to B-boys and MCs. "It can be tough to keep it fresh week after week," Harry contends. "The entertainment sector here is so concentrated that it's really easy to lose your crowd the second you start to slip up. You have to really stay on top of your homework."
