Antone's Record Shop on Guadalupe commemorates its 20th anniversary this Sunday with in-store performances from blues staples Omar Kent Dykes of Omar & the Howlers, Derek O'Brien, Mike Buck, Eve Monsees, and others, while Saturday, Aug. 25, bears the explosive sounds of the Freddie Steady 5 and the Ugly Beats. The Antone's record label, originally run out of the store's back office, resurfaces Oct. 2 with Toni Price's new Stax-inspired album, Talk Memphis, which was co-produced by O'Brien.
Victory Grill (1104 E. 11th), the Eastside's historic Chitlin' Circuit venue (see "Juke Joint Blues," July 13), lionizes its 62-year legacy with a three-day party. Friday gets funky with the Waxploitation! DJs. Port Arthur's Chris Thibodeaux and the Blues Specialists headline Saturday, and the legendary "Spot" Barnett shares his sax and stories Sunday.
Certified Rock Star Patrice Pike returns from a European tour in time for a belated birthday bash at Antone's Friday with shredders Adrian & the Sickness and Skyblue 72.
The Jazz Pharaohs headline a benefit Sunday at the Elephant Room for their clarinetist and Asylum Street Spanker Stanley Smith, who is still recovering from a successful kidney transplant. The show is free, but donations are encouraged. Several musicians will be donating albums, the sales of which will help offset Smith's medical bills.
