Sparkle Motion
(Super Secret)
There's no doubting Sparkle Motion's commitment to punk rock. On their debut LP, singer SuzAnimal tells dudes to fuck off ("Pleasure Cruise"), misinforms dudes ("Lie"), and fantasizes about burning down one dude's house ("Hot Foot"). And when her throaty howl absolutely eviscerates "Drinkin' & Dialin'" with the rusty shiv, "I know I shouldn't, but I'm gonna do it anyway," well, the dude probably had it coming. Three chords is all the local quartet needs to convey a message, at times recalling the vitriol of Long Beach's Red Aunts, though often, as on "Two Whole" and "Torn Eyes," Suz and drummer Jillian Jerk's power-pop roots show up in their harmonies. For anyone still doubting their commitment, the closing cover of Redd Kross' "Kill Someone You Hate" pretty much sums it up. (Sparkle Motion burns down Hole in the Wall Friday, Feb. 23.)
