The Octopus Project/Black Moth Super Rainbow

The House of Apples and Eyeballs (Graveface)

The Octopus Project are good at what they do. Instantly catchy and beat-driven but still experimental, the local quartet's live show consistently blows away the uninitiated. This extended collaboration with Pittsburgh's Black Moth Super Rainbow, a year in the making, finds things a tad mellower, the album a patchwork of beats, samples, and often-melodic guitar, passed from Pittsburgh to Austin via sonic mind-jammery. The whirl of "Lollipopsichord" is a pure skate-pop, hot-pants jam, while "Spiracle" feels like something ripped from Blade Runner, synth buzzing on the rails behind neon guitar loops. Yvonne Lambert's Theremin drones on "Elq Milq," keeping perfect time with a woozy beat. "All the Friends You Can Eat" employs the much-maligned vocoder but redeems itself with a buzz-heavy ass-shaker of a chorus. Standout "Psychic Swelling" shimmers with an Air-tight quality. This House party still captures the rawk of the live show while pitting (wo)man against machine.
