Video Rewind: 7 X 5

October 20, 2006, Music

Rock & Roll Circus (1968)

Scrapped magical mystery tour starring the Who, Lennon's supergroup with Clapton and Richards, and Brian Jones' slide on "No Expectations." One-time only ("Parachute Woman"), plus v.1's last gasp ("Salt of the Earth"). DVD. ****

Gimme Shelter (1970)

The Maysles brothers' seminal account of the tour and studio sessions that ended in murder at Altamont Speedway still screams "Gimme Shelter." Criterion DVD. *****

Cocksucker Blues (1972)

Singularly notorious rock & roll document of the abject boredom and debauchery that accompanies major-league touring. Cue the fluffer. Bootleg only. ***

Ladies & Gentlemen, the Rolling Stones (1974)

Fort Worth and Houston, June 24-25, 1972, live: theatrical release that never made it to rentals. Doesn't get much sweeter than this, Virginia. Bootleg only. ****

Let's Spend the Night Together (1983)

Hal Ashby's cinematic wrap-up of the Stones 1981 North American tour was considered a hangover upon release, but 20 years later, it's a one-night stand that bears someone to cream on. VHS. ****end story

Video Rewind (1984)

Little seen video compendium with ticklish wraparound by Jagger and Wyman. "Angie," "Neighbors," "It's Only Rock & Roll." Fire up the bubble machine. VHS. ***

25 X 5: The Continuing Adventures (1989)

No Direction Home as preinterpreted by SNL's Lorne Michaels. ****
