Quenching the Flaming Lips

By Austin Powell, September 15, 2006, Music

Wayne Coyne and Matt Allen are spiritual brethren whose colorful outlooks on life and off-kilter ideas manifest themselves into larger-than-life productions that affect everyone around them. The two first met at All Tomorrow's Parties, November 2004, in Matt's hometown of Long Beach, Calif. "I got there pretty early because it was the first festival with the ice cream truck," Allen recalls. "The Flaming Lips were sound checking. This was right around the time of the SpongeBob movie, so they were playing the song they wrote for that. ... Then afterwards, Wayne came up and got a SpongeBob Popsicle." Allen also distributed ice cream with a push cart on the Lips' Xingolati Groove Cruise, a four-day freak fest at sea, and from "Bessie" at Vegoose Music Festival Halloween weekend in Las Vegas. "Those were some wild times; you wouldn't believe me if I told you," Allen claims. They touched base during SXSW 06 during the Lips' surprise show at Fox and Hound and later during the Sasquatch! Festival at the Gorge in Washington. Allen actually entered the Lips' bizarre reality during their performance at Wakarusa Festival in Kansas. "I had some rather yummy pasta, then hopped up on stage, threw on an alien mask and robe, and danced my ass off for the whole set," Allen reminiscences. "I dance all the time, but I had no idea how tiring it could be doing it on stage for a whole set."
