ACL Fest Interviews

Pat Green

8:45pm, Saturday, Cingular stage

Pat Green knows a thing or two about big shows. Last September, he played to nearly 30,000 rabid fans, headlining the inaugural ACL Festival, then turned around and sold just under 60,000 tickets to a Houston Rodeo performance in March.

"I hear musicians complain you can't get intimate at a large show," says Green, who recently sold out his belated Backyard debut, later enjoying a plum spot on Willie's Picnic bill. "But people don't want to get intimate. They come to the big shows; they want a big show. And whether it's 10 or 10,000 people, you get what you give. You exert big energy, and you're gonna get it back."

Already Austin's biggest draw, Green's sophomore set for Universal, Wave on Wave, a collection of anthemic tunes with glossy pop edges, debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart and is expected to go gold by year's end.

"A good review and a couple of bucks buys you a cup of Starbucks," says Green. "I like what Ray Benson told me: 'Don't read your press, weigh it.' The only thing I know for certain is that my bills come every month, whether I'm getting one star or four. So my only job is to go out there and bust my hump. That's the only real game plan there's ever been."
