In My Dreams (Warner Bros.) Rick Trevino fans have much to celebrate this week; In My Dreams marks the local's return to his career's country beginnings. He may have left the cowboy duds behind, but the 10 tightly woven tunes written by Trevino, Raul Malo, and others, is bona fide country spiced with the Latino musical influences Trevino's picked up along the way in ventures like Los Super Seven. Dreams bolts from the chute with the amusing "Overnight Success," a decidedly unglamorous description of life on the road. The album's title track will surely get some airtime with its woozy guitars and dreamy lyrics ("You are ... the name I always whisper in every prayer I pray"). But it's the suite of love-gone-by songs that are the most striking. "She'll Never Know" and "Downside of Love" capture the moment when you've crawled out from the pain, bruised, but with a now-sober heart. "Beautiful Day," the third song in the suite, intrigues with its ironic lyrics sung against a bright score: "I love you baby ... but I've got more important things to do. It might be nothin', but it's my nothin', and nothin's better than to be with you." The sultry "Are We Almost There" will make the young girls cry, while Trevino's cover of "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman" nearly makes one forget earlier versions. In My Dreams is a dream album for Rick Trevino.
