Martí Brom
with the Cornell Hurd Band
Feudin' and Fightin' (Goofin')
Martí Brom eschews her usual coy roots-rockabilly stylings for this outing, opting for a half-dozen songs that have more of a hillbilly Tin Pan Alley feel. Naturally, with renowned South Austin goofballs Cornell Hurd and company behind her, there's no way things could get too serious; the background chorus on "Moon Shine Lullabye" could pass for a football team, while Hurd's aw-shucks half of duet "Making Love Tennessee Style" is a hoot. There's no question that Brom has the vocal chops to make it work, the longtime Austinite crooning like a songbird on several occasions, which prompts Hurd to lay an entire string section behind her on a song or two. She's amassed quite a few fans over the years, and not just locally, but even if the hardcore rockabilly contingent doesn't quite know what to think of this release, Martí Brom makes it happen nonetheless.
