...all there's been in forever. Considering pressing 45s is now more expensive than stamping out CDs, the trickle of local vinyl both big and small has slowed to draught proportions. Not doing the collapse is Austin's Peek-a-Boo Industries, who continue to kick the shins of Big Brother by eschewing major-label million-sellers for DIY college radio credibility. Worth about as much hardship as a career in fry cooking, that course has led Peek-a-Boo down a path of consistent winners, and Fivehead's new, two-song gem, "Goodie the Rat" b/w "Better Part of the Year," continues that tradition. Following last year's outstanding debut LP It's Not All Good and It's Not Right On, the local quartet once again rocks down the length of Silver Scooter bassist John Hunt's Athens/ Minneapolis musical corridor. The tunefully neo-caustic A-side rings with guitars and harmonies, while the It's Not All Good and It's Not All Right outtake B-side is no less a chip off the full-length. Too bad that's not the case with the only other local 7-inch to come across the National Affairs desk here at the Chronicle. Sabado Gigante's baby blue vinyl "Vote for Gigante" on Punk Rock Stripper Girl Records is a rallying cry for the Costa Rican Freedom & Reform Party of North America's grass roots campaign for the presidency, and come November, this ATX "rapper/producer/dj/ lawn service" public servant will have our vote in the elections. Pro trampolines, Tijuna Brass, walk-in humidors, comic books, Lone Star mini-flags, fish sticks, chainsaws, nipples, nap time, cookies, ice cream, and fire, Gigante is not only down with Hiphop nation, even Alfred E. Newman -- er, George W. Bush -- who graces the cover of our candidate's 45, has conceded the race. Doing the rhythm on flipside, Gigante's platform is a can't-lose.
