Sue Foley

Love Comin' Down (Shanachie)

When a career has been built as steadily as Sue Foley's, where each new album shows marked growth and forward movement, there comes a time to step off the fast track and let that experience simply be heard. Foley not only takes her place alongside Susan Tedeschi, Debbie Davis, Deborah Coleman, and all the other women wielding blues guitar in one of the last bastions of male musicianship, but she gets to sit down and enjoy it. Like her past few releases, Foley's own material dominates this one, and her songwriting ("Am I Worthy," "Two Trains," and the co-authored title track) is as delightful as her playing is soulful. Foley's guitar swagger has been tempered by time, and classics like Willie Dixon's "Same Thing," "You're Barking Up The Wrong Tree," and Huey P. Meaux's "Oh Baby (We Got a Good Thing Goin')" showcase her fleet-fingered flair with proper panache. "Empty Cup," a bluesy lament with an undulating melody and the seductive harmonies of Foley and guest Lucinda Williams, is a sensuous, romantic sentiment that demands candlelight and kisses. There's more of this deliciously languorous Sue Foley on Dixon's aptly titled "Same Thing" and "Mediterranean Breakfast," which seems like an excellent direction for her. Foley has been recording for nearly a decade now, and it wasn't always evident she would prove her mettle. She proved it without argument by 1995's Big City Blues and later on Love Comin' Down. She doesn't need to prove a thing anymore.
