The word "Acoustic" scares some people -- "Uplugged"
even more so. To them, it means "emasculated." No balls. We have
an MTV marketing scheme to thank for this. And yet this same monster has
taught the general public something Austinites have known for years: A sole
acoustic guitar in the hands of a determined musician can be more electric
than twin Marshall stacks. We learned this lesson at the Cactus Cafe. At
the Hole in the Wall. At Emo's one night with Johnny Cash. Any two-bit taco
joint with a stage in the corner. It's as Austin as Clifford Antone. As
Austin as the Austin Acoustic Music Festival.
In its sixth year, the AAMF is also in a new location: The Green Room
(306 E. Fifth Street). That's practically Sixth Street, which is appropriate
because with 50 performers over a three-day period (Friday through Sunday),
ducking in and out may have to be an option -- particularly since the Green
Room is a non-smoking venue without an alcohol license. Guess that means
you'll just to have to listen to the music, and as strong and diverse as
this year's line-up is, you'd better.
As is the norm these days, they'll be broadcasting some of this sucker
over the Intenet via Monsterbit Media (monsterbit.com/aamf). You won't be
able to see the photo exhibit at the club this way, nor the union of Scottish
and Brazilian music in Sambathistle, who perform Saturday on AAMF's outdoor
stage at San Jacinto and Fifth street (5:10pm). For all other acts, see
the schedule below (subject to change, of course) or call 512/467-7680 for
more information, and 499-TIXS for you know what. -- Raoul Hernandez
