The Tavern has been a popular watering hole and eatery and Austin's most tradition-packed venue for sports viewing for many decades. Not only is it open till 2am, it's also air-conditioned.
Current and former Esther’s Follies cast members, along with other Austin entertainers, transform into your favorite mystery-solving gang to solve The Haunting of the Tavern, with a different ending each night. Featuring a script by the Follies' Shaun Brannigan and original music by Doug Ewart, this darkling comedy brings a modern touch of nostalgia – and includes a three-course meal by the Tavern's chef Johnny Romo. We daresay: Jinkies! Tue., Dec. 6, 7pm. $75.
Word got out that the burgers are divine, and soon we discovered a varied and plenty appetizer menu. Our mouths were too full of Parmesan fries to take it all in, but we know the Chicken-Fried Beef Tenderloin takes the sports bar menu to a new respectability. Never fear for thirst – the beer selection here is terrific.
