Texas Memorial Museum

2400 Trinity, 512/471-1604
Dinosaurs to Inca pottery - this museum is not limited to things Texan. Although the older displays could stand refurbishing, still the place is interesting and educational. Lots of prehistoric animals, Sam Houston's handgun, the "Horsemen of the Americas" exhibit featuring South American silver pieces, a fascinating mineral and fossil collection of which only a handful of the million pieces are on view at any given time, and the occasional art exhibition, such as the recent showing of Edward S. Curtis' photographs of Native Americans. Go there on a hot muggy afternoon; it's free and cool - in more ways than one!
