Between 1893 and 1895, William Sidney Porter (better known by his pen name O. Henry) lived in Austin with his wife and daughter in a small cottage on Pecan (now Fourth Street). In 1930, it was set to be demolished to make way for a warehouse, but a coalition of women’s organizations managed to save it and have it moved to Fifth Street a block east, where it was restored and opened to the public as a museum in 1934. On display inside are pieces of the original furniture and of his belongings, including a copy of The Rolling Stone, the weekly newspaper he published, and a dictionary he is said to have read from cover to cover.
